Photoshop…or maybe not

I’ve been a Photoshop user since version 2.5. It’s a program I truly love – and the latest version (CS) is a fabulous update to Version 7 (which I’m still running).

But what if you can’t afford the $649USD for this incredible image manipulation and graphics creation program? In fact, what if you haven’t got the money to spend, period – but you are running Linux or Mac OS X Panther (10.3). (Okay, there are Windows and Unix versions, too.) GIMP may just be the answer. GNU Image Manipulation Program is an Open Source (read free) program that may not quite be PS – but it comes awfully close. For the Mac, you just need to download the X11 program from Apple and the GIMP from here.

I downloaded and had it up & running in a couple of minutes. It’s not as intuitive for me as PS. (Like I said, I’ve been using PS since version 2.5). But, did I mention, it’s free!
