Viewer Discretion Advised – as a Marketing Ploy

24 addict that I am, I’m stuck in front of a cathode ray tube watching Fox. Just watched a promo for another Fox show, Bones. Looks like a scary show this week. At the end of the promo, the announcer states “Viewer Discretion Advised.” Sounds like a great way to make sure the kids are watching.

  1. OK…I saw the same commercial and thought the same thing. (being also a 24 addict.) “Viewer discretion advised”? It’s a little like announcing, “we know our product is tasteless, rude and offensive, so it’s up to you if you really want to watch it.” What kind of marketing is that, exactly?
